A polluted water body like a lake or a pond has been contaminated by various forms of pollution like chemicals, untreated sewage, septic overflow, industrial wastewater, solid waste dumping and agricultural runoff. When a water body becomes polluted, it can negatively impact the health of the ecosystem and the plants, animals, and people who depend on it. Normally a polluted lake or a pond would have decreased oxygen levels, reduced biodiversity, unwanted algal blooms and the presence of other toxic substances that can harm the environment, aquatic life and humans. Polluted lakes & ponds are unsuitable for recreational activities, such as swimming and fishing. It also loses its aesthetic value.
Lake or pond bioremediation is the use of natural microorganisms to clean up contaminated lakes. It is a process which uses both aerobic and anaerobic degradation of nutrients & contaminants by specific microorganisms. It is extremely important to remove pollutants, such as nitrogen and phosphorus from the water column and also from the bottom sludge.
